Silicon carbide commonly known as carborundum, gem name drill pulp, for silicon and carbon phase bonding of ceramic compounds, silicon carbide in nature in the form of moissanite this rare mineral exists. Today, silicon carbide is widely used in the manufacture of high temperature and high pressure semiconductors. Large single crystals of silicon carbide can be grown by Lely method. Artificial moissanite gems are obtained by cutting large silicon carbide single crystals prepared by the Lely process. Carbonite, another form of silicon carbide, is marketed as a gemstone with a hardness close to diamond, but with greater transparency, and it adds color to the increasingly diverse world of ceramic materials.
